Berthold Newsletter Jan 23-27th

Hello Parents!

I hope all of you had a great weekend and much needed time with your children!  We were busy at Berthold!  The children continue to exceed and grow and we keep up the work to follow them!  As we move closer to next year Rodney and I are able to now look back on the first half of the year and see many growths, challenges, and exciting times to come.  We meet them all head on with determination, grit, and compassion for all Berthold's amazing students.

One of the exciting things the Berthold team gets to participate in this year is to help our partners in silicon valley AltSchool to develop a platform of applications suited specifically for Berthold Academy, aligning with our core mission to value academic and social emotional education equally.  This transition for our school next year will only require you, our parents to learn how to operate a few applications.  We are working on having someone from AltSchool come out for hands-on demo's and tutorials for our parents.  ( I have seen these applications and knowing our community it will be pretty seamless.)

The application will consist of two main umbrellas of web-based apps.

We are so excited to be part of only three other schools in the world to run these applications in our school.  All will allow for deeper, more meaningful education for every child with us.

CULINARY

This week in Culinary, our students took advantage of the warm spring-like weather and tended to a much work needed garden.  We picked the remaining turnips and roasted them accidentally setting off the fire alarm!  WHOOPS!  The students exited quickly and and quickly were back to their normal routine!  Next Culinary class we will be starting our project to develop our own restaurant from concept to service.

MUSIC

The children covered lesson's 4, 5, and 6 in the book and their work will be attached to their My Homework app 1/30.  I will be sending guitars home with Group 1 from Lower Elementary. If your child comes home with a guitar, please reference their My Homework app for the pages.  If you have any questions please email me.  If your child has a guitar at home please let me know!  It will helps to schedule out the home practice!

LOWER EL SPANISH

This week in Spanish we learned how to express like's and wants.   The children were tasked to find the names of different items they liked and wanted and presented them to the class.  We finished our directional "road block" game as well! Going forward the students will have follow up worksheets in the classroom to reflect what we are studying and may work with them by choice during independent work time.

TECHNOLOGY DISCOVERY

This week Upper el continued work on purchasing items for their VR compliant computers.  The Zerion Software team came along to assist them in their search.  They were shown the parts of the computer with hands-on exploration of two high-powered machines brought in by the Zerion team!  SO COOL!

Berthold Newsletter - January 16th - 20th

Hello Parents!

Recently we sent out a survey to you in attempt to get some well-valued opinions and insight into your experience as pioneer parents.  From day one we have set out to be better each and every day we are in operation.  You, as you always do, responded!  Thank you all so much for the constructive feedback and suggestions for the future.  We cannot promise to always get things right, what we can promise is that we will always continue to learn and improve, just like the students we teach.

One key point that stuck out with this survey was that you as a parent group felt we needed to improve on communication.  In response to that, I will be writing a weekly newsletter to inform parents of upcoming events, and of course, to address the issue of communication of the specials teachers.  (Music, Tech Discovery, Spanish, Art, Science Etc..)  Weekly, you will receive an overview of what was covered in each curriculum.  This way, you can feel involved in the process and ask questions at the dinner table with your children.

We will continue to survey you to figure out how we can improve, what we are getting right, or things we need to work on.  Thank you all so much for your support.

ART

This week in art the students read "Why Is Blue Dog Blue?," by George Rodrigue.  This book is a "tale" of color!  The children then did their very own Blue Dog art projects which came out beautifully!

MUSIC

This week in music we began our guitar class!  We broke into groups of 5 and each received a beginner lesson for 20 minutes!  We covered the first page of Hal Leonard's Guitar Book One.  In this lesson we reviewed the bottom string and learned E,F, and G.  We played the three notes on the Treble Clef using quarter, half and whole notes.  We will be sending home guitars once a week with your child to practice what they are learning using the sheet attached to their My Homework App.  Please return the very next day as other children need to take them home!

LOWER EL SPANISH

In Spanish this week played our "Spanish Game Show" where the students break into two groups and compete for points!  Then second lesson of the week was directional language.  The students were blindfolded and sent through an obstacle course using the Spanish terms for left, right and straight to get their friends to safety!  It was a blast.

TECHNOLOGY DISCOVERY

This week in Tech, the Lower El students attached their screens to their Raspberry Pi computers!  They will now use these computers to begin a study of code!

Upper El and Middle School were tasked with building a computer from the ground up with the budget of $500.00.  They are attempting to build the best computer they can for the budget.  I can't wait to see where they go with this!
